PERENNIALS WITH FLOWERS FROM MID- TO LATE SUMMER

MALLOW

Easily one of the most popular and reliable mallows, forming a large, woody- based, semi-evergreen bush, covered with deep pink flowers during summer.

NEPETA

Aromatic, toothy leaves clothe the erect clumps of four-angled stems. The long, interrupted spikes of large, deep violet to lilac-blue flowers are loved by bees.

MAINACHT

Its German name, ‘May Night’, aptly describes the velvety, dark indigo-blue flowers, with purple bracts, borne in long spikes on leafy, four-angled stems.

BERGAMOT

The dense clumps of downy, four-angled stems hear crowded heads of purple-lilac flowers with red-tinted green bracts. All parts are aromatic when bruised.

OBEDIENT PLANT

During summer, spikes of bright purple- pink flowers, excellent for cutting, top the dense clumps of four-angled, smooth, erect stems, clothed in narrow leaves.

VERBENA

Bees, butterflies, and hoverflies are all attracted to the delicate clusters of tiny, lilac-purple flowers that crown the tall, branching stems. It will seed freely.

Perennials with Autumn Flowers

MOR MANY GARDENERS, especially in cool-temperate zones, ill autumn is dominated by the brilliant tints of dying leaves and the equally colorful effect of seed heads, berries, and other fruits. Comparatively few perennials choose to flower at this time, but those that do are all the more valued, as their late displays enliven the garden before the onset of winter.

MONKSHOOD

A bold, clump-forming perennial valued for its stems of dense, deeply cut, dark green leaves and panicles of helmeted, purple-blue, dark-eyed flowers.

MOON DAISY

Late and lovely, this bold daisy has clumps of tall, leafy stems and sprays of big white blooms that face and follow the sun. Once known as Chrysanthemum uliginosum.

JAPANESE ANEMONE

All the so-called Japanese anemones are reliable and useful. This one forms clumps of dark shoots with three-lobed leaflets and a long succession of clear pink flowers.

AUTUMN CROCUS

This is one of the most spectacular dwarf bulbs, especially in large drifts. Its double, slender-tubed, pinkish lilac blooms may need support. Leaves emerge in spring.

NERINE

Spectacular in autumn, this bulb’s smooth stems flaunt loose umbels of lily-like pink flowers. The narrow, strap-shaped leaves follow later. It is superb in group plantings.

DWARF CYCLAMEN

Neatly lobed, beautifully marbled leaves follow the exquisite, slender-stalked, pink or white flowers. Useful for ground cover under trees or for group plantings.

BUGBANE

The tall, arching stems of this graceful perennial bear long, cylindrical racemes of tiny white flowers above deeply divided, dark green to purple-tinted leaves.
